Another Take on Zillow Getting Zapped
I recently pointed out some complaints lodged with the FTC against Zillow. The idea seems to be that Zillow is providing property evaluations ("zestimates") in an irresponsible manner.
Not all realtors agree with the complaints. Some think its an unfair shakedown. Realty Thoughts, Bloodhound and Future of Real Estate Marketing all have a negative, and interesting, take on the complaints. One over-riding thing that can be said in favour of Zillow: its what the customer wants, and the market always listens to that voice. But, in a world where the customer is always right, even when he's wrong, is Zillow the answer, or a way station?

I have used Zillow to obtain real sales and tax data. I put large caveats on any calculated or extrapolated pricing. In Canada this information is offered by RE agents but, to date, comparables are difficult (though not impossible) to obtain directly by the general public. RE agents can offer insight into markets and offer other services with real value I am sure. But I think the days of REBs acting as information "gatekeepers" are numbered.
