Multiple Colas Through Triming
Is it possible to grow multiple colas on a plant that normally just grows one? The answer is yes. In fact, it's pretty easy. Selectively pruning the young plant can get your 2 or even 4 colas on one bush.

What exactly is a cola? That's easy. A cola is the long thick bud that some plants produce - it's called a cola after the Spanish word for tail. Not every plant gets a big cola as a result of strain and growing techniques and some get really big ones. However, if you're growing on a small scale but want to impress yourself and your friends, I'd recommend growing the biggest colas you can.
You'll likely get the biggest colas by growing single ones. Some gardeners feel tht more colas means more yield, however, and they have a point. There are two methods to get multiple colas - training and trimming. We'll talk about trimming in this article.

What I mean by "trimming" is to pinch off the top of the plant when it's still young. This is a time honored garnering technique. Gardeners have been doing it for centuries. If you've ever grown fuchsias, for example, you know that if you pinch off the growing tips while the plant is young you'll get way more flowers. It also works with different plant varieties. You can encourage bushy, rather than tall, growth.
With this kind of plant you can use a few pinching techniques. You get a slightly different outcome with each technique. There are fans of both approaches. Try each and decide for yourself which is the one you like most.
Start by letting the plant develop a few nodes. The place on the stem where branches pop out is a node. The nodes occur on the plant's main stem, which is where the plant branches off. The plant keeps growing up the center by popping out a shoot between the nodes, going upwards.
If you pinch this growing tip off just above the 5th or 6th node the plant will replace the pinched off tip with two new ones on each side of the main stem. These will then grow as if the plant had two main stems. Each will keep shooting off branches and leaves as they grow, but the two new shoots will be the dominant branches.
You can do this different ways. In fact, if you like you can just pinch off every growing tip you find, and end up with a ton of small buds, but if you do that you won't get any colas . You'll get lots of little buds, but no huge colas. There are two happy mediums, though. One will produce two main colas; the other will produce four. Either way, you should get some big ones.
The first way involves waiting until the plant has developed 3 or 4 nodes. You trim the center stem about an inch above the node. The plant will send out two new stems where you pinched it off, as well as two more from the node right below. Two sets of new stems means 4 colas. The second way is to pinch the plant off one node lower. That will only leave one good inter node to sprout. Two stems = two colas.
Can you wait until the plant is bigger and pinch it off higher? Will I get 6, 8, 10 colas? Not really. By pinching off the main stem you're tricking the plant a bit, and manipulating it's hormones. However, you can only go so far with that. If you pinch off every growing tip you'll increase the number of colas, but they won't be worthy of the name. They still work, mind you, and will perhaps increase overall yield-they'll bloom and work fine, but they'll be small. The growth hormone will have been too spread out. No big fat colas to make your buddies smile.
That's about all there is to it-clip and wait for Nature to take it's course. Growers argue about which technique will produce more bud, but it's very hard to get a true answer on this. There are really no controlled experiments that I know of. Remember, light also plays a huge role. If you have all the light coming from above it won't reach lower parts of the plant as well as it reaches higher parts and the lower buds will suffer as a result. As they start growing they'll also tend to spread apart and let light into the center of the plant (and as a result get lower into the plant, letting more of it get light energy). Keep in mind that we're pruning in order to get big colas that will blow our friends' minds. Have fun with it, and don't forget - you can root the cutting that you pinch off and have another plant for more experimentation!

Haven't tried this one, yet it might be helpful to some of my known friends getting such plants on their backyard. Montana Real Estate CE students had also recognized their plants when some of them had visited our home. Well it wasn't planted near ours but you can probably see it from our window.
